This I Believe That Home Is Where the Heart Is
I grew up in a cozy town called Springfield in the “Show Me” state of Missouri. It was the best place when I was little. When I got older however, I decided I wanted to see other places. When I take the nineteen hour road trip down there, I am reminded how wonderful it is. To me, this means that no matter where you are, home is where the heart is.
As I pull up in the driveway and get out of the car, I can smell the aroma of the honeysuckle trees on the side of the house. I hear the loud buzzing of the cicadas taking their place on the bark. I always enjoy being there for the Fourth of July. The barbecue cooking burgers, hot dogs, and ribs and enjoying all of my family and friends that I miss throughout the year makes me never want to leave. These are only a few things that I look forward to when I come to visit in the summer.
There is so much to do and the trips are never long enough. I have great memories from my past there. I visit as much as I can, and then I wonder why I ever wanted to leave. At 21, I thought the best way to see new places was to join the U.S. Navy. I saw the Great Lakes and Chicago and two years later came to Willow Grove, PA. I always wanted to venture the east coast so I was very excited.
I enjoyed the big city of Philadelphia. There is so much here to do and see so I was fascinated. I would get out as much as I could and couldn’t wait to tell my friends back home. Even still today when I go back to Springfield, they say I talk to fast and say words funny. When I come back here, friends say I talk to slow and sound funny.
I enjoy being here and am glad to have met some wonderful people that I would have never met. I met my husband here and we have great children who also can enjoy the trip to Missouri and see new things they aren’t used to. They can run around in the grass barefoot, and see everyone wave at them and say hello wherever they go. Here you are lucky if the cashier at Walmart even looks at you. I guess why it’s called “southern hospitality”.
If anyone has the chance to visit near Springfield, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. It is different, but so is everywhere else you go. It doesn’t matter where you were born or where you were raised. You could’ve moved ten times, but I bet there is only one place that you really felt like you were home. This is why I believe wherever your heart is, that’s home.
