Should America provide more funding for SNAP? If so, how much of an increase? If not, how does the current funding seem appropriate?
The current amount of Food Stamp benefits is $3 per household per day. With that amount, no one can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner sufficiently if at all. The benefit amount should be raised to atleast an amount where everyone in the household can eat healthy meals everyday. The amount should be represented by the number of people living in the house.
How should Americans define “food insecurity?” How should Americans define “starving? What solutions can Americans use to overcome food insecurity and starving in America?
Food insecurity should be defined as when a family can't feed everyone in the house sufficiently with nutritional food. Starving should be defined as when a family goes without any food for atleast a day. Some solutions would be to write the congressman, representatives of your area to get food assistance raised and make the policies to qualify for benefits more available for those who need it. People should ask for help from family and friends and not be ashamed of their circumstance so more people are aware. If no one knows you need help then how does one expect to get help? They might also be in need and everyone could work together.
Do you live in a food desert? How can America feed people who live in food deserts?
No, I do not live in a food desert according to the US Department of Agriculture website mapping of food deserts within Philadelphia. My zipcode isn't but other parts of Philly are. I found it sad because in my neighborhood, there's 3 big supermarkets to choose from as well as neighborhood mom and pop shops that sell food as well. In Pennsylvania alone since 2011, 88 new or expanded grocery stores and food outlets have been created by the Fresh Food Financing Initiative and Michele Obama's "Let's Move" campaign. This would be a helpful initiative in every state but also to offer education about the benefits of healthier food than the processed foods that people have grown accustomed to buying. Even with fresh foods as an option, they still buy the "junk" foods.
Should America rely on charities to feed the hungry? How much of a reliance? Charities are beneficial, but should not be the only means of getting a meal. They should be used for the families waiting to receive food stamps and those who do not qualify for benefits and need extra help. More people should donate food and money to make the donated foods given more balanced with fresh vegetables and such.
In what ways can America better subsidize the farming industry and its crop production? People must write their congressman and representatives for their area for funding to support the farming industry so farmers have the funding for growing and harvesting more crops and delivering to food retailers in every state. Crop production should expand nationwide so people can have better access to fresh foods and gain healthier lifestyles.
What are the most common myths and misconceptions about those who depend on food banks and other food assistance programs? The most common myths are that people who depend on food banks and food stamps are lazy and poor and choose to not get jobs to feed their families.
